Mediocrity

How does one unfold
Cramped up into tight spots
Hugging oneself, tight, tight
Struggling against any chance of flight.

How does one uncurl
Foetal positions to protect our heart
Brace it, nail it, chain it.
Making it safe,
They say.

Refuse mediocrity.
Stand against the wind in your face.
Receive the slaps, receive the curses, receive the scorn.
Be grateful for it, smile at it, feel it in your guts.
Withstand the pain, the loss, the ripping away.

You miss the friends you loved.
You miss having a home where you feel you, where you feel safe.
You nestle into the nearest thing.
There is no harm in that. Is there?

Feel the wind on your face,
The wet wind, rain slapping you merrily.
You may be responsible for some, but not for all.
That responsibility is sacred and paramount but beyond that…
Beyond that, lies your responsibility to you, to humanity.
You are humanity, what you do to you, you do to all.
